Online Photo Show to benefit the Amazon Medical Project

The holiday sale was such a huge success, that I have decided to continue donating 15% of all photo sales to the Amazon Medical Project, a medical clinic in the Peruvian Amazon. Great for homes, offices, and as socially responsible gifts!

What is the Amazon Medical Project?

The Amazon Medical Project is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that runs Yanamono Medical Clinic in the Peruvian Amazon. The clinic was founded 16 years ago by Dr. Linnea J. Smith, M.D, a practicing physician from Wisconsin. The goal of the clinic is to serve Amazon river communities deep in the Peruvian jungle who otherwise would not have access to western medicine. Initially, Dr. Smith operated out of a small thatched-roof room without electricity, running water, staff, funding, or lab services. After hearing a radio interview featuring Dr. Smith, volunteers from the Rotary Club's District 5580 built a six-room clinic complete with a well, solar panels, a hammock house for patients and their families, and adjacent rooms for clinic workers and visiting medical staff. While the clinic is rudimentary by western standards, it manages to treat 2000-2500 patients a year, most arriving by dugout canoe or on foot. Services include family planning, prenatal care and birthing, dental care, treatment of snakebites, cholera, parasites, and malaria, care of trauma, and treatment of a multitude of infectious diseases.

Why Did I Choose The Amazon Medical Project to Support?

In short, the Amazon Medical Project saves lives! In a place where children often die from treatable respiratory illnesses or diarrhea, and occasionally succumb to malaria, poisonous snakebite, and other tropical diseases, the Yanamono clinic offers  medical services that can be crucial to survival. The staff of the clinic come from nearby communities and therefore understand the needs of people being served. Charges to patients are nominal, and are waived in cases of inability to pay, a circumstance not true in the government-run clinics in Iquitos, the nearest city (50 miles from the clinic). Patients often paddle several hours in their dugout canoes to reach the clinic, illustrating the importance of the clinic in the lives of surrounding communities.

Why is it called an “Online Community Supported Photo Show?”

The “online community” refers to you and your friends… and your friends' friends'… and so on. For this project to work, I need your help to pass the word on to people who might be interested in supporting this cause. I am asking you to pass the information about the clinic and photo show to your friends and family who may be interested in issues of international development, access to health care, the environment, South America, photography, etc. Those people, together, are the “online community” to which I refer. Please send this information to your email contacts, list-serves, online forums, etc.

What will the money from the photographs be used for?

15% of all of the money spent on ALL photo sales will go directly to the clinic. It will be used to pay local staff, purchase  medicines, buy equipment, and maintain the clinic. There are almost no overhead costs associated with the Amazon Medical Project. A little bit of money goes a long way in the Amazon.

How does sponsorship work?

We turn every dollar that you donate into three dollars!

Sponsors are an essential part of the project and are helping me to reach my goal of matching 50% of all photo sales until Christmas! We are almost there. Do you want to help by sponsoring the event?

I am personally donating 15% of all photo sales directly to the Amazon Medical Project. I am inviting sponsors to match the 15% donation that I will be giving in order to leverage the maximum support for the clinic. Essentially, a sponsor's donation would mean that the clinic would receive an additional 15% of of all photo sales for each participating sponsor. As a donor, this means that for every dollar that you donate to the Amazon Medical Clinic, they are also receiving a dollar from me and from the other sponsors, so you know that your money is going a long way! Even if the you agree to match only up to a certain amount ($100, $500, $1000...etc), a little bit of money can save a lot of lives in the Amazon! If you would like to sponsor the event or have any ideas for potential sponsors (foundations, companies, individuals, etc.), please contact me at brianscottmiller@gmail.com.

Some sponsors have given a flat donation that will be used to match 50% of sales.

A big thank you to all of the sponsors - We appreciate your support!

What is the history of "Photography for Philanthropy?"

In May, 2006 I held a photo show in Los Angeles called “Exposure.” The two-day event included a photography show/sale along with the sale of artisan crafts from Chiapas, Mexico. The event raised over $5,000 to benefit the Women Of Corn In Resistance artisan cooperatives of southern Mexico. It was a huge success and it marked the beginning of my interest in using photography for social change!

I have heard about your prints on canvas. Where can I order them?
